Using social media to disseminate research, love it or leave it?

This was the theme of a recent presentation given in Montreal at the 82nd Conference of the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).  The presentation titled “#Science in #Social Media: Love it, or 🙂 404 Error?”  explored the extent to which researchers,  are using social media channels like blogging, tweeting or Instagram to disseminate their research.

Here the argument was made that while many universities have social media accounts, very few researchers in the area of science are using them to communicate research findings.

This article, posted on the University Affairs blog examines this idea more fully and includes a quote from Dr. Alireza Jalali, professor at the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine who explains that while social media may not be for everyone, there is room for improvement within the academic environment.

This topic was also explored elsewhere, and I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this.  I invite you to share tools and resources on our social media channels 🙂 , Bboard or to email me at sasha.caputo@rrps-nb-sprn.ca.
