L.R. Wilson Internship in Public Service and Public Policy established at Mount Allison

New opportunity in experiential learning will allow PPE students to gain experience in public service as part of their university studies

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University is pleased to announce the establishment and inaugural recipient of the L.R. Wilson Internship in Public Service and Public Policy. The internship, valued at $10,000 annually, will allow students in Mount Allison’s philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) program to gain practical work experience in an agency, non-governmental organization, or government department.

Established by Lynton R (Red) Wilson, retired Chairman, President and CEO of BCE Inc., Mount Allison honorary degree holder, and long-time champion of public service, the internship is open to students in Mount Allison’s philosophy, politics, and economics program.

Third-year student Claire Henderson-Hamilton of Montreal is the first recipient of the L.R. Wilson Internship. Henderson-Hamilton will be working at Inter Pares, an Ottawa-based non-governmental organization this summer.

“Thoughtfully managed co-op and internship programs, with the support of leaders and mentors in our universities and colleges, and in the private sector, play a useful role in attracting some of the best and brightest to public service,” says Wilson. “I look forward to hearing about Claire’s experience with Inter Pares and those of future Mount Allison interns.”

“The L.R. Wilson Internships will provide our students with exceptional opportunities in public service and experiential learning,” says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell. “I wish to thank L.R Wilson for this generous and forward-thinking gift to Mount Allison.”

Henderson-Hamilton says Mount Allison’s PPE program was one of the reasons she came to Mount Allison and that the internship will provide valuable hands-on experience.

“I would like to thank Mr. Wilson, Inter Pares, and the University for this incredible opportunity. I am thrilled to receive this internship award,” says Henderson-Hamilton.  Throughout the summer, I hope to gain some knowledge of what works well in the public sector and apply this to my studies and future work as a PPE student.”

About the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program

Established in 2013 and one of only a handful in Canada, Mount Allison’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program helps students develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well no matter their chosen career.

This multidisciplinary program gives students the opportunity to look at the world through three distinct disciplines and begin to recognize how each of these aspects of society work with and against each other.
