Keynote Lecture
Bullied: Youth, Gender and Homophobia

To listen to news reports, it would seem that we are in the midst of a bullying epidemic in which the primary victims are gay kids.  Popular accounts frame bullying as something that one, often high status, homophobic kid does to another, often lower status, gay or lesbian young person, often with devastating results.  In this talk Dr. C.J. Pascoe will unpack the assumptions that drive the popular discussion about bullying and highlight the important role of gender in these aggressive interactions.  Drawing from her book Dude, You’re a Fag, she argues that aggressive homophobic interactions between young men are central to the way they come to think of themselves as masculine. In her lecture Dr. Pascoe suggests ways we might begin to rethink bullying by addressing issues of gender, sexuality and inequality.
