Students Funded by NBSPRN Student Grant Program Win Top Prizes at SURF

Following a record summer for the number of student researchers on campus, Mount Allison University’s annual SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fair) event took place on Friday, September 20th, 2013 in Tweedie Hall. (www.mta.ca)

SURF is a student-run event, giving students the chance to share and present their research to the public.  Students from disciplines across campus gave presentations and were judged by a panel made up of Mount Allison faculty and notable members of the Sackville community. (www.mta.ca)

This year students presented their work on posters and using the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) format for their talks. Students presented their research in three minutes, through spoken word only. Prizes were awarded to the top presenters.  The prize for top poster presenter went to Corey Filiaggi, while the top oral presenter prize went to Kylie de Chastelain.  Both students were funded through the New Brunswick Social Policy Research Network’s Student Grant Program. We followed up with Kylie to ask her about her collaboration with NBSPRN and how NBSPRN’s Student Grant aided her in her research.

“ I was very fortunate to receive an NBSPRN Student Grant. I am so appreciative of the opportunities it afforded me insofar as facilitating additional research opportunities and travel to enhance my research pursuits. I spent the summer critically examining colonial norms and hidden curriculum in Canadian classrooms – and specifically how these realities impact Aboriginal students and their educational experiences. The Grant was extremely beneficial as it allowed me to purchase additional resources and assisted with travel costs to research libraries in the Greater Toronto Area. ”

NBSPRN is proud to have funded Corey and Kylie and helping them in their own research and collaborations.
